The University of Leicester is home to the archive of the Leicester Mercury newspaper, which has reported on news and events in Leicester since 1874. The collection covers events reported from the 1960s-1990s only, and contains photographic prints, files of newspaper cuttings and photographic negatives. Work is underway to arrange, re-package and catalogue the collection. Due to its size and complexity, this will take a considerable period of time to complete. While this work is in progress, a representative sample of photographs from the archive will be made available for browsing via Special Collections Online. This collection contains a selection of images from the newspaper's industry files, with a particular focus on the British Shoe Corporation; British United Shoe Machinery; Corah; and Equity Shoes.
Further resources relating to Leicester's recent industrial past can be found in the Manufacturing Pasts and Affective Digital Histories collections.
